Undergraduate Researchers - University of Waterloo

Lily Stasko (Fall 2025, Winter 2026)
Lily is a fourth-year Engineering Student specializing in Water Resources. She has a particular interest in how hydraulic processes influence contaminant and sediment transport in urban waterways. Through hands-on fieldwork as an Undergraduate Research Assistant, she aims to better understand the impact of municipal wastewater on aquatic ecosystems, specifically the accumulation of micropollutants in fish and sediments. Outside of the lab, she enjoys baking and has recently been learning to crochet!

Sarah Delanty (Fall 2025, Winter 2026)
Sarah is a fourth‑year Environmental Engineering student with a strong interest in water quality management and water/wastewater treatment. Her academic and research experiences have fueled her commitment to developing sustainable solutions for protecting and improving water resources. She will be joining the Arlos Research Group as a Master’s student in Fall 2026, where she looks forward to advancing her expertise in water research and contributing to innovative approaches in environmental engineering.
Undergraduate Researchers - University of Alberta

Guilaine Flora Wangap, NSERC USRA Summer 2024
Flora is a fourth-year civil engineering student with a passion for environmental sustainability. During the summer internship funded by the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA), she had the opportunity to work with the Arlos Research Group to support Calgary's stormwater project. She has gained hands-on experiences on running in vitro bioassays for water quality assessment. Outside of the lab, Flora enjoys biking and gardening.

Diba Ghahremani, Summer 2024, 2025
Diba Ghahremani is pursuing a BA in Psychology and by far the youngest member of the Arlos Research Group. Diba joined the group in the summer of 2024, just after her first year of studies at the University of Alberta. She contributed to the Calgary stormwater project by assisting with the extraction and analysis of stormwater samples and sediments, and gained valuable insights into environmental engineering. She enjoys listening to mystery podcasts while studying and drawing

Everett Horner, Fall 2023, Winter 2024
Everett is a fifth-year student pursuing a BSc in Civil-Environmental Engineering. He is dedicated to using engineering to achieve positive social and community impacts. For his DRA, Everett is profiling in vitro biological activity in sediment to identify the potential for sediment-bound organic contaminants to contribute towards exposure in aquatic organisms. Outside of the lab, Everett can be found volunteering across campus and he has recently taken up bartending!

Alex Zhou, Fall 2021, Winter 2022
Alex completed his BS.c in Civil-Environmental Engineering in 2023 (University of Alberta). In his last year, he joined the Arlos Lab for an 8-month Dean's Research Award focused on evaluating the estrogenicity, cytotoxicity, and mutagenicity patterns within the municipal wastewater treatment plants in Calgary. He quantifed the extent to which these biological activities can be removed by conventional and advanced wastewater treatment systems.

Katrina Cereno, Winter 2022
Katrina completed her Dean's Research Award with the Arlos Lab in Winter 2022. She worked on the mass balance analysis of micropollutant loading into the urban sections of the Bow River in Calgary . She was able to connect with the whole team and expand her knowledge in the water resources field of engineering. She loves watching Grey’s Anatomy and The Office while studying!

Pramaya Kannel, WInter 2022
Pramaya is an undergraduate co-op student pursuing a BSc in Civil Engineering. He is passionate about societal development through use of sustainable water, land and air resources. For his DRA, he worked with Dr. Arlos visualizing and analyzing trends of Athabasca River Oil Sands Monitoring project. Pramaya is a huge soccer fan and enjoys outdoors.

Seth Bumagat, Winter 2021, Winter 2022, Fall 2023, Winter 2024
Seth was the first Dearn's Research Award (DRA) student in the Arlos Lab. During his first DRA, he streamlined the process for data visualization and analysis of emerging substances of concern (ESOCs) data collected by the City of Calgary. After a successful DRA, he continued as a NSERC USRA student in the summer 2021. Seth came back to the Arlos Lab as DRA student in 2022. At this time, he worked closed with Emily Quecke on the analysis of water quality data collected from the Philippines. He extended this DRA by exploring the relationship and the value system of Filipinos towards clean water.
